The 1903 Cubs finished 8 games behind the pennant-winning Pirates, good for third place in the National League.
Four of the key members of the great Cubs teams of the 20th Century’s first decade were in place in 1903. The emergence of catcher Johnny Kling allowed Frank Chance to move to first base. Shortstop Joe Tinker was establishing himself as one of the game’s most steady-handed middle infielders. While this pre-season photo shows Johnny Evers, a late September call-up in 1902, in left field, Evers supplanted team captain Bobby Lowe at second base and hit .293 while playing flawlessly in the field.
The foundation for the greatest era in Cubs history was beginning. The acquisition of several great pitchers would take place shortly. And by 1906, the Cubs would post an amazing 116 wins in a single season.
