Wheat was a hitting machine stuck playing for horrible second-division teams for most of his career. From 1912-1927 Wheat never hit under .300. Remarkably, he recorded back-to-back .375 campaigns after age 35. Playing on aching knees, the hard-hitting outfielder gave it one last shot at the pennant with the A’s in 1927, but fell short of post season play, thanks to the Yankees. Off the bench for Connie Mack, the 41- year old Wheat still managed to hit .328.
