This lot contains what, on the surface, may appear as an obscure, minor league pre-war issue. But in terms of sports memorabilia and American advertising collectibles, the eight cards presented here with their original mailing envelope are of historic significance. In 1933, Wheaties aligned itself with sports for the first time and introduced the slogan, The Breakfast of Champions.” General Mills first unveiled the slogan in commercials on legendary Minneapolis radio station WCCO, during Minneapolis Millers games. And Wheaties first baseball offering using the slogan happened with the release of the 1933 Minneapolis Millers postcard set, featuring 25 subjects, including players and WCCO announcers, Al Sheehan and Jerry Harrington. You won’t find any Hall of Fame rookie cards in this set, nor will you find any legendary characters of the game; you will, however, find the first glimpse into one of America’s most iconic brands as it entered a lifelong association with sports and sports marketing. As a conversation piece and the representation of the genesis of one of the all-time great marketing programs ever created, this set has few peers.
