Grimes was the last legal spitballer in baseball, with a career that started in 1912, included a stop in the minors under the legendary Carlton Molesworth at Birmingham and ended almost 25 years later. Along the way, Grimes won a World Series ring with the Cardinals in ’31, racked up 270 victories and garnered the reputation as perhaps the most belligerent pitcher in baseball history. According to one long-since forgotten batter, “Grimes idea of an intentional pass is four pitches at your head.” This ’33 Grimes delivers high marks for colors and icy whites. PSA has graded 456 of this single, with only one graded higher.
