Traynor and the Pirates were no match for the Yankee’s pennant-winning buzzsaw of a lineup in the 1927 World Series. Despite being swept by the pinstripers, Traynor extracted a bit of revenge, breaking up Herb Pennock’s perfect game, with an eighth inning single during Game Three of the ‘27 Fall Classic. Widely regarded as the greatest third baseman in history for generations, those who saw Traynor play still contend he was superior to both Brooks Robinson and Mike Schmidt.
