While SGC lists this card as a 1933 issue, newer evidence points toward the fact the card was issued in 1927 and possibly distributed through 1929 as a strip card. Ruth was at the pinnacle of his popularity in 1927, so the revised date has changed. To say that movies and the quality of script writing has changed since the 1920’s would be an understatement. In this “semi-silent” classic – the movie was released using VocalFilm technology, a short-lived movie genre that used a sound-on-film process that delivered music and effects but wasn’t accurate enough to sync with the spoken word (the sound feature was unusable by most movie houses of the time). Ruth starred opposite Anna Q. Nilsson in this cornball classic as Babe Dugan, star player of the Angel baseball team, who chews tobacco and gets his uniform dirtier than any other player. Vernie (Nilsson), the laundress who cleans his uniform every week, becomes concerned over his untidiness; Babe calls to apologize for unintentionally striking her with a ball during a game; and his pal, Peewee, falls in love with Vernie's friend, Georgia. On an outing to an amusement park, a roller coaster throws Vernie into Babe's arms; soon they are engaged, and Vernie plans to reform him. Scores of tobacco cubes and spittoons are pre-wedding gifts, and they precipitate a lovers' quarrel. But Babe takes the reform idea seriously, though his game slumps and he is put on the bench. At a crucial moment, Vernie relents and throws him a plug of tobacco; and consequently he delivers a four-base blow. Babe Comes Home was released on May 22, 1927 and is now considered a lost film because no original copies are known to exist. The movie’s run time was 60 minutes.
