Earl Averill just may be one of the most under rated Hall of Famers in baseball history. Owner of a .318 lifetime batting average, the Cleveland Indian superstar’s career was unfortunately cut short when a lower spine disorder gradually took a toll on his power, reducing him to “slap” hitter. Still, in only eleven full seasons, the five time all-star managed to clout 238 home runs and accumulated almost 1,200 R.B.I.’s. For all his success, he is still best remembered for stroking a line drive off the foot of the immortal Dizzy Dean in the 1937 All-Star game, breaking Dean’s big toe which eventually led to Dean’s premature retirement.
