With the resurgence of pinup culture and pinup fashion alive in well, demand for the famed 1944, wartime American Beauty set, Mutoscopes and Exhibit pinups have experienced a dramatic spike in popularity in recent years.

Featuring some of the most popular pinup art of the era, including several of the great Gil Elvgren’s most popular pinup subjects, the American Beauties set is attracting attention both inside the hobby and from fashion and art boutiques, who report brisk sales of these cardboard classics.

The uncut sheet of American Beauties featured in this Goodwin & Company auction delivers high marks for condition, with only a slight ¾” surface wrinkle along the upper edge, otherwise the sheet would easily attain a status reserved for NM-MT 8 graded cards.

Of particular interest, in terms of both monetary and display value, is the fact that one of Gil Elvgren’s most prized illustrations appears as the center and focal point of this sheet. Elvgren’s voyeuristic “Peak a View” keyhole themed pinup is considered one of the great prizes of the pinup world. Original Elvgren paintings now commonly bring over $100,000 at auction with “the right Elvgren work” expected to break the $500,000 barrier in the next 24 months.

These glorious, saucy, yet innocent glimpses of the female form were meant for America’s servicemen during WWII and represented not only what they were fighting for, but what they were coming home to – the girl next door, couched in innocence with just enough naughtiness to be fun.

Expect late bidding on this sheet. It’s one of the best we’ve seen in all our years in the business.
