This lot presents the rare opportunity to pick up what is certainly the second-most important Topps issue of the 1950’s, and arguably one of the most difficult Topps issues ever in terms of condition sensitivity because of the full-bleed color panels at the bottom of the card. This offering presented in a binder is in a nice, collectible condition, generally Very Good to Excellent, with some below and a handful above that range and the emphasis certainly Very Good. Nine of the cards have been slabbed and graded: No. 1 Jackie Robinson – PSA 4, No. 27 Campanella – PSA 3, No. 76 Reese – PSA 6, No. 82 Mantle – PSA 5, No. 104 Berra – PSA 4 m/c, No. 114 Rizzuto – PSA 4, No. 207 Ford – PSA 5.5, No. 220 Paige – PSA 3, and No. 244 Mays – PSA 6. The No. 54 Bob Feller has a ballpoint pen autograph on the front. Since roughly 2/3 of the set is within the Very Good range, the listing below will detail cards above and below Very Good. Overall, it comes out to about 26 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 62 percent Very Good and 10 percent below. Here’s the breakdown of the keys: No. 37 Mathews – Excellent, 41 Slaughter – Ex, 54 Feller – VG-Ex (autograph), 61 Wynn – Ex-Mt, 62 Irvin – VG-Ex, 76 Reese – VG, 77 Mize – VG, 78 Schoendienst – VG, 125 Williams – VG, 138 Kell – Fair, 147 Spahn – Ex, 151 Wilhelm – VG, and 191 Kiner – VG. Breakdown of the rest (Very Good is the default condition – about 160 cards): Ex-Mt (15) – No. 14, 15, 16, 51, 59, 61 Wynn, 67, 68, 99, 100, 102,115, 223 and 265; Excellent (43) – No. 22, 28, 29, 30, 35, 37 Mathews, 40, 41 Slaughter, 43, 47, 55, 58, 70, 74, 81, 86, 88, 90, 92, 121, 128, 131, 136, 139, 144, 146, 147 Spahn, 152, 160, 167, 176, 187, 190, 192, 196, 198, 219, 221, 222, 254, 264 and 269; VG-Ex (13) – No. 17, 36, 39, 49, 52, 53, 54 Feller, 60, 62 Irvin, 65, 94, 113 and 132; Good (18) – No. 4, 11, 21, 46, 50, 66, 69, 71, 91, 162, 180, 226, 236, 252, 257, 263, 272 and 278; Fair (11) – No. 105, 107, 110, 138 Kell, 168, 193, 204, 273 and 280; Poor (2) – No. 240 and 274. As a curiosity, two additional cards are included with the set: 1953 Topps-style cards of Ted Williams and Dale Murphy – both Nr-Mt to Mt – were produced by Baseball Cards Magazine and inserted with an issue in the mid-1980’s.
