In the early years of the 1950’s, following WWII, Americans were filled with optimism and national pride, wanting “all things American” after the world had focused on Europe in the previous decade. With The Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and “Cowboy and Indian” dramas on TV, radio and movie screens across the nation, virtually every kind of company capitalized on the craze. Enter Red Man.

Red Man Chewing Tobacco is best known for its wonderfully colorful illustrated baseball sets that were released between 1952-1955. But Red Man also issued cards beyond baseball, including this extraordinary 40 card set featuring famed leaders of America’s Indian nations. Many of the Indian Chief visuals can also be referenced from Allen & Ginter’s late 19th century Indian chiefs set. Additionally, the core visuals and style elements from this set were shared with a similar Colonial Bread issue.

Distributed as in-pack inserts, the eye-pleasing American Indian Chiefs set included well-written histories of the each chief at a time when Native Americans were ramping up their fight for equality and acceptance.

This high-grade Red Man set could easily be a foundation piece for a great non-sports collection or a welcome addition to anyone who enjoys living a traditional Western lifestyle.
