Clemente’s 1955 rookie card is one of Topps greatest achievements. Simple. Elegant. Impactful. As we look back, it seems hard to believe it has been over 40 years since Clemente’s untimely death. But every time we think of the great Pirate outfielder, we don’t think about how he died, but rather the life that he brought to every game he ever played. Clemente remains the Gold Standard by which all rightfielders are compared. If you close your eyes you can still see him settling back under a fly ball, anxiously waiting as he sees the runner tagging second. Just before the ball hits his glove he begins to move forward, already starting his throwing step, as the ball lands in his glove he quickly grabs it, recoils and releases with the speed of a Joe Namath pass. The ball rockets toward the infield on a laser-tight line, sailing over the runner’s shoulder and into the third baseman’s glove on the ground just in front of the bag. Bang! As we’ve stated before, Clemente cards are selling at an all-time high and continue to rise, with no end in sight. This NM 7 Clemente represents a wonderful opportunity, as higher graded cards have seen their prices simply skyrocket.
