Mickey Mantle was simply unstoppable in 1956 and fittingly, Topps launched the season with what many feel is his best Topps card of all time, rivaled only by his 1952 rookie card. Coveted by collectors, the 1956 Topps set is arguably the company’s most attractive offering from start to finish. The addition of action-based illustrations, based on action photos, captured the imagination of everyone from hard-core collectors to kids to casual fans. Topps’ true dominance of the hobby that lasted for nearly 40 years kicked off with its 1956 set. In Mantle’s greatest season and two most dominant years - 1956 and 1957 - Mantle had the finest back-to-back seasons of the post-war era, winning the AL MVP both seasons, capturing the Major League’s Triple Crown in 1956 batting .353, with 52 home runs 130 RBIs. He just kept going in 1957, hitting .365, belting 34 home runs and driving in 94. Additionally, Mantle became the major league’s all-time leader in home runs by a switch hitter in 1956, while leading the Yankees over the defending champion Brooklyn Dodgers in what would be the last all-New York World Series until the Yankees and Mets squared off in 2000. This one is graded PSA 8.5, which means only 43 examples have been graded higher.
