Gibson accomplished something no other pitcher has been able to match in the history of the game. Gibson was so dominant, he was the catalyst for the greatest rule change in baseball in over a century. It was Gibson’s 1968 season that served as the final straw forcing baseball’s rule makers to lower the pitching mound, because batters of the day were simply over matched by the pitchers of the time.
