Kids back in 1963 didn’t really care much for Topps rookie card design, which featured four decapitated heads in red circles surrounded by yellow. And we can’t say that we really blame them. It wasn’t Topps best design. But one special card among the rookie crop did stick out, because if featured legendary Pirates slugger Willie Stargell. The now deceased Stargell was a groundbreaking figure, crossing racial lines and becoming synonymous with Pittsburgh following the death of Roberto Clemente. This bold Stargell signature, with his trademark backward slant, is a must for any Pirate fan, Hall of Fame collector, or long ball fanatic. Autographed rookie cards don’t get much better than this!
