To find a GEM MINT ’72 Topps of Roberto Clemente is akin to finding buried treasure in the middle of the ocean. It rarely happens. This miraculous and immaculate card has defied Father Time and looks as though it should have a stick of bubble gum directly behind it. Every time we see this card, we’re baffled by the so-called baseball experts at Topps, who stripped Clemente of the coveted “star number” of 0 or 5 in 1972. Clemente had just exhilarated the nation in the 1971 World Series, batted .341 during the regular season, was fewer than 200 hits away from 3,000 and was still without question the best rightfielder in the game. Yet, somehow, Topps didn’t deem Clemente a star. Make no doubt, we see Clemente as a star – and this GEM MINT 10 deserves the star treatment. Only 22 examples of this card have received the coveted Gem Mint designation.
