rom 1921 through 1964, post season baseball was considered a New York Yankees birthright, as the Yankees captured the pennant 29 times. But after the Yankees fell to the Cardinals in the 1964 World Series, the Bronx Bombers went from dynasty to doormats seemingly overnight. The team wouldn’t see meaningful October baseball again until 1976. And one of the biggest reasons for the resurgence was catcher Thurman Munson. Munson was an old school, rough-and-tumble kind of catcher who played with a no mercy style that often rubbed opposing teams the wrong way. While Munson’s demeanor didn’t always win friends, his talent and commitment won him fans and respect from his peers.

While often gruff on the outside, Munson was caring, considerate and compassionate to fans, particularly youngsters. This autographed ball from Christmas 1978 shows exactly that side of the Yankee great. A personalization and good luck wish on a stocking stuffer holiday surprise reflects Munson the man.

This beautifully signed Wilson Little League Ball is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest backstops to every play, who typified the famous Roy Campanella quote, “To be good, you gotta have a lot of little boy in you.” Fingerprint toning is evident on the ball, and is consistent with aging for a signature of this era.

Munson signatures, particularly desirable personalized signatures that tell a story, are exceedingly rare. So we recommend bidding early and planning to be up late for this relic from forty years gone by. You’ll probably never see another ball quite like it.
