For all of his quirks, Waddell was an amazing pitcher. He so infuriated the great Connie Mack that the A’s manager traded him, after the great pitcher ran off the mound to chase passing fire trucks during games. Tiger manager Hughie Jennings would often derail Waddell on the mound, by shaking children’s toys at the pitcher from the third base coach’s box. In the end, Waddell’s tale is tragic. He remains a lost talent, a simple, innocent and eccentric man. Destitute at the time of his death, Connie Mack forwarded funds to make sure Waddell would have a “proper and suitable burial.”
