Originally sold in sets of 15 for 25¢, Dietsche Post Cards command slightly higher prices today than they did when first introduced on the market. Issued annually in Chicago and Detroit, Dietsche issues featured the Cubs and Tigers, combatants in the 1907 and 1908 World Series. True post cards, each card featured a brief player biography on the reverse, along with a proper mailing area. Within the 1907 set, two variations of Ty Cobb are known to exist, featuring both a batting and fielding pose. 1907 marked the first of three consecutive years the great Cobb would lead the Tigers to the World Series. It also marked the first of Cobb’s nine consecutive and twelve total batting titles, both records. Playing on his first pennant winner, Cobb also paced Tiger outfielders on defense, racking up 30 outfield assists. As we all know, Cobb would go on to become baseball’s greatest hitter of all-time; a point accentuated by the fact that the Georgia Peach owned 90 major league records upon his retirement in 1928. For the advanced collector or Cobb enthusiast, we proudly offer this unique Ty Cobb Batting pose post card. Believed by many to be Cobb’s true rookie card, this example shows signs of handling consistent with the VG 3 grade. However, given the scarcity of this early baseball relic, and the fact this card rarely reaches the market, we suggest you place your bids early and plan to stay up late upon auction’s close. We expect action on this offering to become rather heated down the stretch.
