The extremely nebulous 1925 Universal Toy & Novelty cards that were hand-cut from 5-1/2” x 13” sheets and designated as W504 subjects are considered one of the scarcest type cards in the hobby. The manufacturer issued four team sheets on cheap paper including the Brooklyn Dodgers, N.Y. Giants, Washington Senators and N.Y. Yankees. A team photo was included with the 16 different players, with each subject individually numbered and measuring some 1-3/8” x 2-3/8”. The flimsy paper stock resulted in the hand cut cards being extremely condition sensitive with visually pleasing examples few and far between, justifying why this remarkable 16 card near set offering may suffice as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for the advanced type card enthusiast. Amazingly, 16 of the 17 possible subjects are included with only the oversized Brooklyn Dodgers team card missing from this obscure set.

The cumulative G.P.A. totals to an impressive SGC 73.25 or 5.75 figure with the 16 cards representing two-thirds of the total 24 SGC encapsulated copies for ALL FOUR TEAMS, with not a single Universal Toy subject graded by PSA! The 3 Hall of Famers included are Burleigh Grimes (SGC 80/6), Dazzy Vance (SGC 60/5) and Zach Wheat (SGC 50/4), with the lowest graded card for the remaining 13 subjects being a single SGC 50/4 specimen. Listed below are all 16 cards and their respective SGC technical assessments:

SGC 84/7 (3 cards): #104-W.M. C. Ehrhardt, #105-J.F. Fournier, #110-Andy H. Johnston

SGC 80/6 (8 Cards): #102-John H. DeBerry, #103-William L. Doak, #107-Burleigh A. Grimes, #108-C.P. Hargreaves, #109-Andrew A. High, #111-John Mitchell, #112-Tiny Osborne, #113-Milton Stock

SGC 60/5 (3 cards): #106-T.H. Griffith, #114-James W. Taylor, #115-Dazzy Vance

SGC 50/4 (2 cards): #101-Edward Brown, #116-Zach Wheat

Incredibly, virtually all of the subject’s black & white images present extremely well, with a majority of their perimeter portraying sharp edging. It is obvious that these hand-cut artifacts were meticulously detached from their original sheet, and NONE of the 16 examples exhibit obtrusive flaws. It is unimaginable that a hand-cut thin paper-stock card could possibly retain the attributes to achieve “mid-grade” to “near-mint” technical assessments, yet all of the offered subjects have managed to fall into this elusive category for any condition sensitive issue. Here is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for the world-class type collector to seize two-thirds of the professionally graded W504 Universal Toy cards via a single final bid!
